Video: PlayStation Vita’s AR game trio

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized

With the retail launch of the Vita hardware comes the arrival of three augmented reality games, using a set of six cards that look an awful lot like the ESP test cards Dr. Venkman used in Ghostbusters. I downloaded them all from the PlayStation Store today, carefully set up a camera between my face and Vita (keeping the table in view) and demonstrated all three.

Of the three, Fireworks is the definite standout. And by “standout” I mean “one I could foresee playing a second time.”

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized
google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 — which just recently made the move to the browser’s beta channel — has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second — Web Navigation Extension — is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions — like Traffic Light — to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you’ll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we’re not aware of any examples just yet, however. We’ll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

T-Mobile wants FCC to block Verizon’s spectrum deals with cable industry

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized
T-Mobile

Call it sour grapes, posturing… whatever you want. The fact remains that T-Mobile has stuck its nose in the middle of Verizon’s quest to bulk up its wireless portfolio. Big Magenta filed a request with the FCC on Tuesday, asking the regulatory agency to step in and block the transfer of AWS spectrum licenses from Cox, Time Warner, Comcast and Bright House to Verizon. The deals, which will cost the carrier roughly $3.9 billion, are already drawing interest from the Justice Department, which is concerned it’ll place too much control in the company’s hands. T-Mobile, the smallest of the nationwide carriers, is equally worried about the concentration of spectrum in Verizon’s big red paws. Presumably, though, that has more to do with its inability to purchase it — especially in the aftermath of the collapsed AT&T merger. Metro PCS and some public advocacy groups also voiced their opposition, while Sprint took a more measured approach, saying only that the FCC should look closely at the agreements. See, handset makers aren’t the only mobile companies that can whip up a good legal drama.

Flash roadmap reveals new features, improved GPU support, lack of retirement plans

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized
Flash

Flash for mobile may just be a spectator at its own wake at this point, but the desktop browser plug-in is still alive and (reasonably) well. In fact, Adobe has a host of plans for its flagship multimedia platform, as outlined in its 2012 roadmap. It all starts with 11.2, which should be landing sooner, rather than later, with support for right and left mouse clicks, multithreaded video decoding and improved GPU acceleration support. That will be followed by Cyril and Dolores, which will also expand the list of hardware-accelerated video cards, as well as improve overall performance and add a few welcome tweaks, like supporting keyboard input in full screen mode. Finally, in 2013, we’ll see the debut of Flash Next — a completely overhauled platform with major updates to the runtime core and ActionScript language that are designed to “meet the needs of developers over the next five to 10 years.” Check out the source for full details but, be warned — it’s PDF only.

Hack Makes Nook Touch E-Ink Display Almost As Responsive As LCD

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized

nookAs you probably know, bistable or passive displays like the E-Ink ones in e-readers focus on battery life and readability rather than color and interactivity. The latest devices have been optimized for fast page refreshes and touch operation, but generally you’re still waiting a half a second or so for the screen to flip over to the next page, menu, or what have you. But that’s not all they’re capable of. We’ve seen hacks before, but this one definitely takes the cake.

ASUS Transformer Prime bootloader unlock now available

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized

ASUS Transformer Prime

As promised, the bootloader unlock tool for the ASUS Transformer Prime is now available for download from ASUS directly. It's a simple little .apk that you'll download, move to your tablet and install, and it will set in motion the ability to rock custom ROMs and basically mod to you heart's content. Note that you'll need to have the Ice Cream Sandwich update installed, but you've already done that, we hope.

The flip side is by doing so, you're basically absolving ASUS of any responsibility should you break something. Or, as ASUS puts it, "You also acknowledge ASUS does not guarantee service satisfaction to any Revised Product." We love it when you talk all sexy-like, ASUS.

Hit up the download link below to get going.

PSX games now available in the Android Market, if you own an Xperia Play

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized
PlayStation One games on the Android Market

If you’re lucky enough to own an Xperia Play — Sony Ericsson’s new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad — you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don’t have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely — and more importantly, will it be possible to ‘spoof’ the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today’s release of first-party PlayStation games.

Apple’s 2012 environmental report reveals giant solar array

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized
Apple data center

Apple just released its 2012 environmental report, detailing all the ways it’s conserving energy and working to make Mother Earth a slightly cleaner place. A highlight of that effort is clearly the company’s data center in Maiden, North Carolina. The giant white-roofed server bunker will soon be home to the largest end user-owned solar array in the US — covering 100 acres and producing 42 million kWh of electricity each year. The 20-megawatt installation is only the beginning too. A five-megawatt fuel cell facility will soon be going up alongside it. Hit up the source link for the full report, but be forewarned, it comes only in PDF format.

Sony Google TV rooted to allow unsigned kernels, no soldering required

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized

Sony Google TV

The folks over at GTV Hacker have released a root exploit for Sony Google TVs.  The NSZ-GT1 Eagle (that's the Blu-ray player) and the Asura stand alone TVs can use this method, requiring only some software modifications and a little wizardry with the remote — no soldering or other hardware modification is needed. Devices running the latest 3.2 Honeycomb firmware are required, and the detailed instructions will have you running a custom kernel that brings a number of new features:

  • Modified flash plugin with random per box flash string for Content Provider Bypass.
  • Crippled update feature to prevent box from receiving automatic updates.
  • Completely RW system, cache, and rootfs partitions
  • Full ADB Root
  • Removed signature checks on kernel / init scripts / init binary
  • A few other surprises.
  • BETA: Enable NTFS Support for Sony Google TV devices

In layman's terms, this means that your GTV is rooted with full write permissions to the file system, won't auto-update and break things, uses a desktop identity for site that use flash to play streaming video (like Hulu), and has some sort of surprises for us. We like surprises.

As mentioned, the process doesn't require any hardware modification. That doesn't mean it's easy, and the instructions look like this is something you'll want to carefully read. You'll be downgrading the software and exploiting it via some image files you burn to four individual USB thumb drives. Once complete, you'll be able to boot your GTV normally and the thumb drives are no longer required. Of course, any warranty is gone the minute you start doing these sorts of shenanigans, so keep that in mind. If you're the curious type, head to the source link and have a look.

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian

google voice search

Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google’s official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search’s polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized
mozy vmware

Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware — which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware’s official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn’t so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it’s the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware’s curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, “Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering.” He adds that the move will allow VMware to “further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities” of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don’t need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy’s service without interruption.

Libra for Android helps you track your weight using The Hacker’s Diet system

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized
libra

I’m getting fat; that’s what you see on the screenshot to the right — my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you’ve ever read The Hacker’s Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you’re gaining or losing weight.

When I use my “main” PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I’ve had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It’s a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker’s Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day’s weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today’s weight (as they’re usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you’re not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.

Screenshots of ICS build on Droid RAZR leaked, could be the next Blur?
Last week Moto unveiled in detail its rollout plans for the mighty ICS treat that’s heading towards its handsets and slates. Now, if a set of screenies is to be believed, we have a quick glimpse into what we can expect once its promised Q2 outing comes around — at least for Big Red’s RAZR variants. At first glance, the alleged Ice Cream Sandwich build isn’t much different than what you’d see in its native state. That said, there are bits that would make it easy for any connoisseur to tell ‘em apart, including: different icons, dialer and drop-down menu, as well as a redesigned shooter UI. Unfortunately there’s no word as to when it’ll legitimately hit the masses, but all you RAZR fans can see more screenshots of what Motorola may have in store at the source below.

Android apps on the PlayBook can keep their built-in ads, won’t support RIM ads

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized

Let’s face it: a free PlayBook is nice, but it’s not enough. If Android developers are to be persuaded to give up soccer practice and hot dates to stay home and re-package their apps for PlayBook OS 2.0, then they’re going to need some advertising income too. Which is why a report over the weekend, claiming that ported apps would not support mobile ads, caused no end of fuss. Fortunately, it was the result of some kind of miscommunication and RIM quickly clarified that the updated PlayBook OS would support the ad services that come built into Android apps, but wouldn’t support RIM’s own BlackBerry ad services in that context. So what’s it to be, the shin guards, the cologne, or the keyboard?

iSites overhauled, now lets you publish cloud-based HTML5 iPhone apps in minutes

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized

iSites — a zero-code cloud-based ‘app creator’ — can now generate HTML5 apps that work on iOS devices. With this new feature, dubbed ‘InstantApp’, you can now design a single app in your browser and publish it natively on Android and iOS, and as an HTML5 iPhone app.

We haven’t looked at iSites before, but it shot to fame last year when it launched with native iOS and Android support. Self-publishing Android apps wasn’t a problem because Google does very little moderation of the Market, but iSites ran into trouble with its iOS apps. Thousands of people signed up for the service after it was featured on Mashable and TechCrunch, and you can imagine Apple’s chagrin as thousands of cookie cutter apps flooded its approval queue.

Genwi, the developer behind iSites, realized something had to be done — it had to circumvent the App Store approval process. Genwi, of course, turned to HTML5 Web apps — which can be pinned to the iPhone home screen and which can be shoehorned into almost behaving like native apps.

Read on for our experiences with iSites’ new InstantApp HTML5 iOS app creator.

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized
cueboyquest

Yes, that’s right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren’t always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight – the have arcing trajectories, so you don’t always hit exactly where you aim.

There’s another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they’re large too. Simply beautiful!

Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized
helloexpense

A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You’re using it on the go, so you don’t have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you’re trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It’s an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation – a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you’re using.

Premium cable TV comes to XBMC, GoodPlayer and more via InfiniTV 4 tuner

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized

In the olden days of CableCARD circa 2004, only a select few devices and software could leverage the card’s power to watch premium cable TV, but not today. Today just about any adventurous dev can take advantage of the fact that an OCUR is a network tuner and access premium cable TV — as long as the content is marked Copy Freely, that is. The latest to unleash that power is XBMC which also helps extend the functionality to iOS via GoodPlayer and Buzz Player as well as any UPnP client with the help of a Serviio media server. Essentially this custom code is acting as a middleman, but fulfilling the dream that any software could directly control and stream from a CableCARD tuner like the InfiniTV 4 is within reach. The only drawback left is that even with the current sale price of the InfiniTV 4 at $199, it still isn’t as low as the cost of entry of something like a ClearQAM tuner.

LG’s Optimus Black Gingerbread upgrade reaches Australia

Author: maciehosteller - Categories: Uncategorized

Android Central

One of the biggest downsides to owning an LG Android phone is the lack of timely software updates. While many of us are looking towards — or already have — Ice Cream Sandwich, some LG owners are still stuck on Froyo. The Gingerbread update for the Optimus Black hit Europe almost a month ago. Finally though our Android brothers down under can get themselves some Gingerbread as the update has managed to reach Australia for Vodafone and Three users.

The Black is a really nice piece of hardware, like most LG devices and deserves to be enjoyed. Hopefully the doom and gloom ends now, and with a slated Q3 push of ICS to the device it will hopefully join the ranks sooner rather than later. With Gingerbread first mentioned by LG way back in October though, anyone left without it now has every reason to feel a bit sore.

The 2.3.4 update is available via the LG Support Website, so head on over there for the full rundown.
